mendocino tree house was built in 1971, and thoroughly renovated by dana gray and graham brownstein in 2016. the house was taken down to the studs, and put back together again with the help of Terry and Laurel Tidwell, the coolest father/daughter builders around.

two bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, dining and great-room with fireplace round out the footprint— quite literally! the cabin is the shape of an octagon, built around a redwood tree with views of the central atrium and surrounding woods from every room. expanses of glass in the main living areas provide uninterrupted views of the meadow and redwood forest.

conveniently located a couple of miles from the village, schools, beach, and just past the fog break, the meadow and surrounding woods are often sunny and warm with ample privacy.

new greenhouse and raised redwood planters, swings, and outdoor bath house with sauna make this spot a very special little retreat and homestead. dana designed the bath house during early cov and it grew into something we now call “bath church.”
